Color Play 2 - Interwoven Puzzle Quilt Block
The Interwoven Puzzle Quilt Block is truly amazing. There’s a wide variety of ways that this versatile block can be colored to create unbelievably different looking quilts. Below are just a few of the many things this block can do.
Original block coloring
This block was originally published in a newspaper called Capper’s Weekly which began publication in 1879. From 1927 to 1935, the weekly paper included a column called In the Heart of the Home where this pattern made its debut. It was designed to be an 8”X8” block. I have redrawn it as 16”X16”.
Placing nine of these blocks in a 3 block X 3 block formate generates this fun and complex pattern.
Moving the color and fabrics around can create such a different look, it’s hard to believe it’s the same block. Below, the fabrics were arranged to focus on the “woven lines”. Putting thes blocks in a 3X3 block pattern creates a true interwoven look. Imagine the fun that could be had with funky fabrics with this approach!
Want something more symmetric? This block can deliver on that too! Below the dark fabric was placed to create a focus on a cross pattern with softer colors in the background. A contrast color was put in each corner of the block. When this block is organized into a 3X3 block pattern, the result is a primary pattern that is strong and symmetric with a secondary softer pattern complete with “floating” small squares.
